Dismantle Racism and Address Unequal Treatment Working Group
Transforming the systems and policies that exacerbate health disparities for moms and babies.
To eliminate the widening health equity gap, we must acknowledge and dismantle structural racism, and address interpersonal racism, bias and stigma that directly and negatively affects the health of moms, babies and families.
This working group will take actions that include:
- Advocating for policies that will transform systems that contribute to creating health inequities
- Promoting processes that increase antiracist workplaces, organizations and leadership
- Identifying and developing best practices for data collection and program implementation

This article from the National Institute for Children’s Health Quality (NICHQ) provides health care providers with four steps they can take immediately to recognize how racism impacts the health of birthing people and their babies and address the Black maternal and infant health crisis in the U.S.
March of Dimes' Mom and Baby Action Network convened a workgroup with biomedical, clinical, and epidemiologic expertise to review knowledge of the causes of the persistent Black-White disparity in preterm birth. The results are found in this journal article published in Frontiers in Reproductive Health in 2021.
Hundreds of thousands of babies are born prematurely in the U.S. each year. This story highlights some of the stories of the women and babies impacted and brings forward expert voices on why the premature birth rate is going up.

But today, too many moms and babies are dying or experiencing serious health complications related to childbirth—and far too many are moms and babies of color. Only by working together can we confront inequities and ensure the health and wellbeing of every family.
